Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among men, with its incidence steadily increasing, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (Alabi et al., 2023). In Nigeria, prostate cancer is a significant health issue that affects a large number of men, particularly those over the age of 50. The diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer often lead to physical, emotional, and psychological challenges, which can significantly reduce the patient's quality of life (Okeke et al., 2024). These challenges include pain, incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and the psychological burden associated with cancer treatment and its side effects.
Nurses play an essential role in improving the quality of life for prostate cancer patients by providing both clinical care and emotional support. Through patient education, symptom management, psychological counseling, and post-treatment care, nurses can help mitigate the physical and emotional impacts of the disease (Fawole et al., 2023). However, there is limited research on the specific role of nurses in improving quality of life among prostate cancer patients in Niger State. This study aims to explore how nurses at the Federal Medical Centre, Minna, contribute to enhancing the quality of life of these patients, focusing on aspects such as symptom control, emotional support, and health education.
Despite the importance of quality of life in cancer care, there is inadequate attention to the specific contributions of nurses in enhancing the well-being of prostate cancer patients in Niger State. While treatments for prostate cancer are available, many patients experience significant challenges related to pain, incontinence, and emotional distress, which negatively impact their overall quality of life. The role of nurses in managing these challenges and improving patients' quality of life needs further exploration. This study addresses the gap by examining how nurses can improve the quality of life for prostate cancer patients through effective care strategies and patient support in Minna.
This study will focus on prostate cancer patients receiving care at Federal Medical Centre, Minna, Niger State. Limitations include potential biases in patient self-reporting and the variability in the level of care provided by different nurses.
